Gaiman’s writing is excellent, and while this was his first novel, his voice was well-honed by years of writing in the comic book industry. The story explores the nature of mythology throughout human history, and how those ideas are expressed in a modern world. The book is populated by wonderfully bizarre characters, and the main protagonist, Shadow, serves as a wonderful avatar for a reader suddenly thrust into a world where nothing is as they thought. The road trip feel of the novel is very engaging, especially the scenes set at the House on the Rock, a real-world location that is, if anything, even stranger than presented in the novel. This novel is a great book for readers who may not ordinarily like fantasy novels.
